Rachel Yankey, at 26 years old, is the most recognized player in women's football and is the face of England - having launched the last four England kits for the FA and her sponsors, Umbro. Yanks plays on the left wing for both Arsenal and England and wears the number eleven shirt. She is sometimes referred to as the female David Beckham. She is the highest capped England player currently playing, with over 60 caps, and has been a regular fixture in the team for the last ten years, having made her debut against Scotland back in 1996. Currently in her second spell at Arsenal, she won the League and Cup double with them last season (2005/6) and in her first spell won the "treble" with them in 1997. In 2001 Rachel became the first ever woman to turn professional in the UK when she signed for Fulham. She has also had two spells playing in the North American League and a spell at Birmingham City. She has done numerous interviews on the BBC and Sky, make training videos for the Children's BBC and the BBC web site, been interviewed by nearly every newspaper and in 2006 she was awarded the MBE for services to football. She runs her own football school in North London where she trains young school children. |
